The World Arena is home to many of the nation's finest skaters and coaches. The Learn-to-Skate instructors are highly trained and experienced in teaching all levels of skaters and conducting the U.S. Figure Skating's Basic Skills Program and Hockey Initiation Program. Participation in the program will enable skaters of all ages and abilities to learn the fundamentals of ice skating and hockey. The curriculum is designed to be fun, challenging and rewarding for everyone!

Class Levels

Snowplow Sam Levels 1-4

Ages: 3-5 years old
Description: A three level curriculum for our youngest skaters designed to develop preliminary coordination, balance, muscle control and strength necessary to move on skates. Skaters will learn marching, gliding, dipping, swizzles, and stopping while participating in games and activities on the ice.
Class Length: 30 minutes
Cost: 7 Week Session - $80.00   6 Week Session - $70.00
Days and Times: Tuesday 6:15-6:45pm    Saturday 10:40-11:10am

Basic Skills Levels 1-2

Ages: 6-15 years old
Description: These first two levels of the fundamental "Basic Skills" emphasize on balance, forward skating, backward skating, gliding and stopping. After passing Basic 2 skaters can choose whether to pursue recreational figure skating or hockey. 
Class Length: 30 minutes
Cost: 7 Week Session - $80.00    6 Week Session - $70.00

Basic Skills Levels 3-6

Ages: 6-15 years old
Description: The "Basic Eights" introduce the fundamental moves: forward skating, backward skating, stops, crossovers and turns. After completion skaters can advance to more specialized areas of skating. 
Class Length: 30 minutes

Pre-Freeskate (combination of Basic 7 and 8)

Description: Every Free Skate level is divided into four different sections: Moves in the field, Dance/Footwork Sequence, Spins and Jumps. Skaters will learn all basic spin positions and single jumps. At this point a skater can choose whether to pursue a recreational or competitive approach to the sport of figure skating. 
Class Length: 30 minutes
Cost: 7 Week Session - $80.00   6 Week Session - $70.00
Days and Times: Tuesday 6:50-7:20pm   Saturday 11:15-11:45am

Free Skate Levels 1-6

Prerequisite: Basic 8

Ages: 16 and up
Description: You're never too old to Learn to Skate! The Adult curriculum is designed to promote physical fitness and improve balance and coordination while learning proper skating technique. Adult skaters progress at an individual rate while being both challenged and motivated. 
Class Length: 30 minutes

Hockey Initiation

Ages: 4-17 years old
Prerequisite: Basic 2
Description: This class emphasizes on proper skating skills that aspiring hockey players need in game situations while wearing full hockey gear. Skaters will develop on-ice balance, coordination, agility, basic skating skills and basic puck control skills. 
Required Gear: Helmet with facemask, shoulder pads, elbow pads, gloves, hockey pants, shin guards, hockey socks, hockey skates and stick. Mouth guards are strongly recommended, but not required. 
(Please bring a water bottle and arrive early for class. Locker rooms are provided.)

Learn to Dance (Subject to availability)

Ages: 6 and up
Prerequisite: Basic 4 or must have permission from coordinator
Description: This class introduces a skater to Ice Dancing and focuses on main components such as basic edges, turns and skating prescribed patterns to a rhythm.
Class Length: 30 minutes
Cost: 7 Week Session - $80.00   6 Week Session - $70.00

Attire

The skaters should dress in layers of comfortable clothing that will not restrict movement. We recommend a hat, gloves and a warm coat. Helmets are strongly encouraged for children under 6 years old. 

Parents, spectators and siblings are not allowed on the ice or on players benches during class.

Register early as class capacity is limited!

Learn-to-Skate participants are divided into small groups according to skating ability and age. Skaters are evaluated throughout the session and badges are awarded as each level is mastered. For Snowplow Sam Levels 1-3 the Instructor Skater ration will never exceed 5:1 to maximize the learning potential in every class. For all other group classes the ratio will never exceed 10:1.

Please Note: There are no refunds for any Learn-to-Skate Sessions once the Session starts.


Every Registered Participant Receives:

  • One 30-minute skating lesson per week on the day you have requested (Hockey Initiation classes are one hour in duration)
  • Seven free public admissions for public skate sessions in the Ice Hall to be used during the Learn to Skate Session (If skaters require the use of rental skates during public sessions they must pay the $3.00 rental fee. Public admissions may be used through Sunday the week the session ends and may not be used after this time.
  • Membership in U.S. Figure Skating complete with an official Basic Skills membership card, U.S. Figure Skating Record Book with stickers and Basic Skills logo and membership year patches
  • Patch upon completion of the class level
  • Evaluation Sheets completed by the skater's instructor(s)
  • Enrollment in Backstage Pass, the online newsletter for The Broadmoor World Arena and Pikes Peak Center
